Illinois Humane is a Springfield-based 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization working to rescue, re-home and provide better lives for abandoned, abused and neglected companion animals. Established in August 2003, it is an all-volunteer organization, with no paid staff.

It uses nine state-approved volunteer Humane Investigators who look into allegations of abuse or neglect of domestic animals.  Four investigators are also approved to do equine cases.

Illinois Humane does not have a kennel facility or office location and all rescued animals are sheltered in a network of foster homes or discounted kennel spaces.

Illinois Humane is not officially affiliated with other area shelters, but works cooperatively with them to provide rescue services and promote humane treatment of companion animals.

FUNDING

  • Illinois Humane relies on the generous support of individuals and businesses in the community to pay for the expenses of veterinary care, food, bedding, carriers, kennels and equipment and other animal care needs.
  • Fundraisers and events are held throughout the year to help cover the expenses of spay/neuter programs, vaccinations, heartworm treatments and other medical care, and other costs of animal rescue and providing programs and services.
  • Financial contributions are always needed and appreciated.

ADOPTIONS

  • Illinois Humane conducts pet adoptions on several weekends each month, usually at PETCO or PETsMART in Springfield.  Notices of upcoming adoptions are listed in the State Journal-Register.
  • Adoption costs are $98.00 for dogs; $90.00 for puppies and $50.00 for cats or kittens.  All animals offered for adoption will be spayed or neutered, micro chipped, tested for heartworm and feline diseases and have required vaccinations.  an application and a home visit are generally required to approve new adoptive homes.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Illinois Humane offers services primarily in Sangamon County and the Central Illinois area, and statewide for some programs.

Major program areas include:
Cruelty and neglect investigations; adoptions of rescued animals; spay and neuter initiatives; animal advocacy; community outreach and education

The New Hope Program  The New Hope Program is a cooperative effort between area animal control facilities and Illinois Humane to save and find homes for dogs that have the misfortune to end up at the “pound” and have not been adopted by the public.  Our trained animal welfare agent evaluates the temperaments of dogs that are at risk of euthanasia and then transfers qualifying adoptable pets into the Illinois Humane network. Illinois Humane provides for any necessary medical care and the dogs are temporarily sheltered in our foster home network. The dogs are met by prospective families at pet adoptions, adopted from their foster homes or seen on the Petfinder.com and the Illinois Humane web sites and some are taken in by breed-specific rescue groups. Since the New Hope Program began in March 2003, more than 300 dogs have been saved and successfully re-homed to caring families.
